Create the seagull designs on the knitted pieces before the jumper is assembled.

  1. Sew a beak (back stitch in gold-yellow) and two eyes (French knots in black) onto the front of the seagull motifs using two strands of embroidery thread. (The beak of the larger seagull will need four strands of embroidery thread so sew over each side twice.)
  2. Then sew the two seagull motifs to the front of the jumper using a very small tacking or running stitch in white sewing thread just a little way in from the edge of the felt.   Don’t go too close to the edge otherwise the felt will disintegrate.
  3. Two legs can be sewn underneath each seagull using gold-yellow embroidery thread.
  4. Then sew ‘v’ shapes onto the back of the jumper using white yarn and a knitter’s (or yarn) needle. The ‘v’s should get smaller at the top of the back as the seagulls ‘disappear into the distance’. Each seagull is made up of four straight back stitches. Use a bullion knot to make the bodies for the seagulls at the bottom. Use French knots to make the bodies for the seagulls in the middle. The seagulls at the top only have wing shapes.
  5. If you choose to put a seagull ‘message’ onto the jumper and hat, sew each piece of felt on using tacking or running stitches a little way in from the edge. Sew a message on the jumper after sewing the shoulder seams but before sewing the under arm and side seams and on the hat before you sew the pieces together, making sure it will be positioned above the turned back ribbing and below the base of the pompom.

TO MAKE UP

  1. Sew shoulder seams together leaving a gap of 4cm on left shoulder by neck edge. (So that Sam has enough space to get his head through the top of the jumper.)
  2. Sew tops of sleeves to shoulders right sides together. (Sew seagull ‘message’ on right shoulder – optional.)
  3. Sew up side seams and under arm seams.
  4. Attach a snap fastener to the outside of the collar points and turn collar over.
  5. Darn in ends to neaten. Turn right sides out.

SAM’S SEAGULL POMPOM HAT

FRONT AND BACK THE SAME (KNIT TWO)

Using 3½mm knitting needles and light blue dk yarn cast on 40 sts
K3 (p2 k2) repeat these last 4 sts until last 3 sts, k3
P3 (k2 p2) repeat these last 4 sts until last 3 sts, p3
Repeat these last 2 rows 3 times more (8 rows of ribbing)

Change to 4 mm knitting needles
St st on these 40 sts for 8 rows starting with a knit row

Dec 1 st at the beginning of the next 16 rows of st st (24 sts).

Dec 1 st at each end of next 8 rows of st st (8 sts)

Cut off yarn leaving a length of about 20cm to use for tying on the pompom.
Pull the end through these 8 sts, pull tight and secure firmly.
Knit another side to match. (Sew seagull ‘message’ on front piece –optional.)

TO MAKE UP

  1. Sew side seams of hat with wrong sides together at the sides of the ribbing and then right sides together along the sides of the stocking stitch. (This is because the ribbing will be turned back.) Turn right side out.
  2. Make the pompom last of all to ensure that you have enough yarn to complete the garments.
  3. Cut out two circles of thin card 6½cm in diameter with a 2½cm circular hole in the middle. (You can draw around a coin 2½cm across [UK 10p]).
  4. Wind lengths of pale blue yarn around the rings until a pad is formed.
  5. Cut carefully around the edge and tie a piece of yarn around the centre between the pieces of cards very tightly to keep the pompom together.
  6. Leave long ends that can be sewn into the top of the hat.
  7. It is easier to tie the pompom onto the hat with the strands left on the hat before pulling the pieces of card away.
  8. Tie the pompom onto the hat and the hat onto the pompom.
  9. Darn in all ends.
  10. If necessary trim pompom to neaten.

Use washable felt for these items (they would be best hand washed inside out).
