Walking

Hello Everyone

The end of the summer is rapidly disappearing and winter is on its way.

Bill, Bob, Emily and Henry love to go on walks in the summer; but we try to go on walks in the winter as well as long as the weather is not too bad.

lf the sun is out, and it isn’t too cold, the worst thing about winter walks is trying to get through a lot of mud.

lf there is any thick mud around, Bob will definitely get stuck in it!

We can sometimes walk on the beach, but it can be much windier down there.

Sometimes when we walk, we pretend to be famous characters from books or films.  lt makes it feel much more of an adventure!

Getting into the habit of walking when you are a child is a good habit to get into.  lf you carry on with this habit for the rest of your life, it will be more beneficial to you than you may know!

There are many benefits to walking.

lt is the cheapest way to get anywhere.

You must have good walking shoes.

lt is a good idea to walk every day, but going for a walk a few times a week is enough.

lt is good for your physical and mental well-being and your immune system.

Mind and body are connected.  Walking helps to calm you mind and lifts your mood. lt helps your stress and depression.  People have noticed that this is true for the whole of human history.

lt helps you to think and make decisions and plans.

lf you are trying to release weight and you don’t like exercise much, or you find it difficult to do, walking is a good place to start.  You can go to a shop to get something, or go to school, which gives you a purpose for your walk, or you can just look at the scenery as it passes you by.

lf you walk a dog, don’t let it bother other people; keep it under control.

Always have it on a lead when you are walking along the street.

lf you want to learn how to roller skate or skateboard, always practice in a place where there is no traffic.  You will need some time to practise controlling your skates or board.

You need to walk for twenty minutes or more. You can go as fast as you like.

You don’t need to jog.  You can walk on a hard surface like a pavement, or a soft surface like a beach.

Your body was designed to move. lt does not like a sedentary life – sedentary means settled and not moving.

Walking pumps blood round your body.  Your blood takes oxygen around to all parts of your body.

This is good for your system of blood vessels, digestive system, lungs, heart, brain and all other organs.

lt is good for your lymph system.  Lymph is that clear liquid that comes out of your skin when it is scraped but not bleeding.

Walking makes your muscles and bones stronger and your eyesight healthier.  Astronauts who live in a zero-gravity living space for a length of time find that it often has a bad effect on their body.

Walking builds muscles without making them sore – so you can take a walk the next day too.

lt helps prevent brain diseases in old age.

lt improves the posture and stability of your spine.

lt helps your immune system – especially if you are walking in the sunlight.

And you may meet interesting people while you are walking.

You can have a chat to these interesting people, or with the people you are walking with, because you have no other distractions to interrupt your communication.  Children should not talk to strangers, but it is alright when you are out with adults you know.

Walking brings people together.

Walking is a shared experience.

lt is safer to walk with other people.

Well, you can imagine what the children will be doing tonight.

Yes, they will be having a Halloween party!

And what is more, they will have pumpkin decorations at the party that they have grown themselves.

The party will be at Emily’s house this year, and the children are spending all day hollowing out their pumpkins while Emily’s mum does some cooking in the kitchen.

The pumpkins are not ever so big; they did not manage to grow monster ones like Captain Jack does.  But nevertheless, it is a great achievement to plant pips and nurture your plants until you have a good harvest.

When you cut a face in the front of your pumpkin, it is a good idea to draw it on first so that you know it looks okay before you start cutting.  In fact, it might be a good idea to let an adult cut the face out for you after you have drawn the face you want.

That is what Emily’s mum did.

Some people have special cutters like cookie cutters, that you just hammer into the pumpkin skin, like cats and stars and faces, and these can make really lovely, neat shapes.

After your party, you can leave your pumpkin outside for the wildlife to peck at or nibble at, but there are two important things to remember.

Cut the pumpkin into pieces and put it up off the ground, you don’t want a creature to get their head stuck in one of the holes.

Don’t leave a huge feast on the ground for the hedgehogs to eat, because the pumpkin flesh will upset their tummies (diarrhoea).

Happy Halloween to all my readers!

lt’s the Weekend!

HOW TO MAKE A GUY FAWKES MASK

Bill and Bob found a really easy way to make spooky Guy masks.

Take a cardboard egg box – a coloured one if possible, but if not, you can paint it.

Cut off the flaps and top.

Cut off one pair of cups.

You will have a pointy-out bit for your nose and a pointy-out bit for your chin from the centre of the inside.

You will need, of course, to cut two little round holes for your eyes so that you can see where you are going!

Then you will need to tie elastic of yarn onto the sides to put over your ears to keep the mask on your face.
